Types Of Putters
When choosing your putter it is vital that you choose the correct type of putter which is determined by your putting style. Even complete beginners have a certain type of stroke, and the best person to help you determine this is your local friendly PGA professional. Their advice is free of charge, and they don’t usually bite!
- If you change the angle of the putter face when you take the club away from the ball (normally called ‘Opening the clubface’), then you’ll either need a toe down or a 45 degree balanced putter
- If your putter face points at the ball during your backswing you need a face-balanced putter which is designed to resist twisting
There are many more factors you need to take into account when choosing your putter, but the next most important factor is the alignment aids which will help you line your putt up. These can be quite personal and there are many different types of putters and different styles so there’s not really a right or wrong answer to this – you need to look at a few different types of putters and just see what works best for you.
The third most important element is referred to as the ‘offset’. It’s a measure of how far the shaft is positioned in front of the actual club face. When you strike your putt, it’s ideal for your hands to be slightly in front of the club head to get the correct strike on the ball. The amount of offset you need is determined by your individual putting stroke so again your best bet is to seek advice from a PGA professional.
There are other factors you need to consider when choosing your putter including:
- What technology does the putter have and is the technology proven?
- Does the putter have an insert? These can be made of rubber, metal, ceramic, plastic, glass and more. Inserts can help provide a different feel
- How does the putter look? This is a very personal thing, but it’s important that when you look down at your putter it gives you confidence
Choosing the wrong putter will only make it more difficult for you to putt well, and we consider it such a mistake that we’ve included it in our “7 Deadly Putting Sins” video lessons which you can watch with no obligation and absolutely FREE by completing your details on the right and clicking ‘CLAIM MY FREE VIDEOS’.
