Do You Know The Basic Rules Of Golf?

To the beginner and even some experienced golfers the rules of golf can seem complex and a little over-whelming.

There is a very good reason for that. That’s because they are!!!

However, if you don’t understand the basic rules of golf properly you can be penalised which means extra shots have to be added to your score or you can even lose a hole in matchplay situation.

From a putting perspective, make sure you understand the key rules of golf to avoid un-necessary penalties. It will also enable you to challenge anyone if they are suggesting you should be penalised.

The key rules you need to understand in putting are:

  • When do you need to mark your ball
  • How do you mark your ball legally. Many people don’t know how to do this properly
  • How do you move your marker legally. Again many people break the rules of golf in-advertantly when doing this
  • How do you replace your ball legally
  • What do you do when another ball strikes yours, or you strike your opponent’s ball
  • When do you need to take the flag stick out of the hole. If not done according to the rules of golf you can be penalised

Remember – a couple of key things you are NOT allowed to do when putting:

  • You are NOT allowed to touch the putting green with your hand. This is considered ‘testing the surface’ and is deemed to give you an unfair advantage
  • You are NOT allowed to repair / tap down / touch spike marks. If you wish to repair something on your putting line it’s always worth checking with your opponent that they don’t think it’s a spike mark
