From Off The Green
Many amateurs stuggle with chipping, so if your ball is off the putting green ask yourself a few simple questions and decide if you could putt it instead. If you think you can putt it, that for most amateurs that is a more reliable shot.
- Assess the situation.
- Ask yourself, can I putt this?
- What is the ground like before the green?
- How is your ball sitting? Is it a bare lie? These are tricky to chip from.
- How far off the green are you?
- How much will the grass slow my ball down?
- Once you’ve made your assessment look at the distance and judge the pace you will need to hit the putt. Of course you must consider what the ball will do once it gets onto the actual green, and what pace and line you need the ball to be travelling on when it gets onto the green.
- You should practise these on the practise green so you must know what it feels like to hit this type of shot from off the green.
- The putting technique is the same as any other putt, but be careful not to get your putter snagged in the longer grass just off the green.
- Trust yourself and hit the shot.
Hitting a poor chip when you could have got it closer with your putter is another Deadly Sin which you should always try to avoid.
You’ll find great little lesson with Maurice and Leanne about putting from off the green on our Seven Deadly Putting Sins video which is your for absolutely nothing! We hope you enjoy it.
